Zakat al-Fitr is the zakat that is due at the end of the blessed month of Ramadan. It is called the zakat of heads, necks, and bodies, and it is also called Zakat al-Fitr. It is obligatory for a Muslim, based on what Imam Muslim narrated in his Sahih on the authority of Abdullah bin Omar, may God be pleased with them both, that he said: (The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, imposed Zakat al-Fitr from Ramadan on the people, a saa’ of dates, or a saa’ of barley, on every Muslim free man or slave, male or female.

Zakat al-Fitr is obligatory on every Muslim at sunset on the last day of the month of Ramadan. It is also necessary to make an intention in it, as the Messenger - peace and blessings be upon him - said: (Actions are but by intentions, and every person will have but what he intended), and the intention is established in the heart before paying zakat, and it is not valid after it, and it is also not valid to replace it or change it. 

Zakat al-Fitr is estimated at a saa’ of the food of the country that its people eat. It may be a saa’ of dates, barley, or something else. As evidence from the words of the companion Ibn Omar, may Allah be pleased with them both: (The Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, prescribed zakat al-fitr as a saa’ of dates, or a saa’ of barley)
